The Brazen Head: Dublin’s Oldest Pub

by Kelly Hayes

Ireland is certainly known for their pubs, and they don’t get much more historic than The Brazen Head in Dublin. Dating back to the year 1198, The Brazen Head is the oldest pub in Dublin, and also claims to be the oldest in Ireland. After a day of historical sight-seeing it’s the perfect place to enjoy a pint, pub food and listen to some traditional Irish music.

History of The Brazen Head

The history of The Brazen Head dates back to the 12th century, when a hostelry originally opened on site. However, the current building dates back to 1754, when it first opened as a coaching inn. Coaching inns were very common across Europe because they catered to both travellers and their horses. These inns would have provided meals, drinks and a place to rest for travellers, while also providing an area for animals to rest. The Brazen Head is located just beside Father Matthew Bridge, which was the original crossing of the River Liffey. It would have been a popular spot for people to travel through.

Today, the building has retained much of its 18th century charm, with its small doorways and low ceilings. It’s certainly a cozy place to have a drink!

Visiting The Brazen Head Today

Whether you’re looking for a quick drink, or a good meal and more of a night out, I definitely recommend stopping by The Brazen Head. The pub food was some of the best I had in Dublin (I highly recommend trying the fish and chips) and they also have a great selection of Irish beer, (as well as wine and other drinks). There is also live music on seven nights a week and on Sundays they have their Sunday Sessions where you can tap your toes along to some fantastic traditional Irish music.
